NEWARK, Del. – One tough inning can prove the difference.
That's what the University of Delaware baseball team fell victim to on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium, dropping an 8-3 decision in the series finale against local rival Villanova.
"We've talked about it a couple times this year and it happened again today with one big inning doing us in," head coach Jim Sherman said. "We had opportunities, but weren't able to fully capitalize. Now we have to focus on three big conference weekends coming up."
Sophomore Zack Miller led the offensive attack with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, including his third home run of the year. Senior Vinny Vaccone had his third multi-hit day in the past four games and freshman Joseph Carpenter extended his hitting streak to 22 games and on-base streak to 35 with a single and two RBIs on the day.
Winston Allen, Andrew Avots, Joey Haas and Tommy Pomatto all had scoreless outings out of the bullpen for Delaware.
Villanova got the scoring going first with a run in the top of the third, but the Blue Hens answered right back by loading the bases with no outs and Carpenter delivering with a single through the left side to plate two and give the Blue Hens a 2-1 advantage.
The big inning for the Wildcats came in the fourth, scoring seven runs on five hits and four free baserunners to grab an 8-2 lead.
Delaware would start to chip away in the sixth with Miller launching a solo shot to left and in the seventh, a sacrifice fly in the seventh by Jordan Hutchins made it an 8-4 contest.
Villanova would stage off rallies in the eighth and ninth to hold on for the victory.
