Hens Fare Well at Season-Opening Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Blue Hens opened their season Friday with a successful day at the Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
 
Freshman Eliza Askarova made a splash in her Delaware debut and finished the day with a 2-0 record in Flight B singles. In the Round of 32, Askarova topped Penn's Clarise Huang, 6-2, 6-1 before coming from behind to pull out a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 decision over Temple's Oyku Box.
 
In Flight A singles, sophomore Caragh Courtney picked up a Round of 32 victory against Drexel's Ghita Benhadi, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
 
Freshman Isabella Montana also picked up a win by defeating Temple's Oleksandra Doroshenko, 6-3, 6-2 in the Flight A Backdraw.
 
In Flight B, sophomore Viva Laas posted the 6-2, 2-6, 10-3 triumph versus Temple's Chunan Xiang in the Round of 32.
 
Junior Sarah Whited also collected a victory for the Hens by topping Drexel's Katka Majorova, 3-6, 6-2, 10-2 in the Flight B Backdraw.
 
In doubles Flight A action, Courtney paired with freshman Jojo Bach for wins against William & Mary and Columbia while Whited and Montana collected a victory over Penn. In the Flight B consolation, Askarova and Laas registered a triumph versus Drexel.
