Blue Hen Swimmers and Divers Return to Action With CAA Tri-Meet

NEWARK, Del. – After 47 days away from competitive action, the Delaware swimming and diving teams returned to Rawstrom Natatorium for a tri-meet with CAA foes Drexel and Northeastern.
The women edged Northeastern 155-142 while tying with Drexel at 149 a side. The men dropped the contest with the Dragons by a 195.5-105.5 final.
"Our Blue Hens had a fantastic day of racing today," said head coach Pablo Marmolejo. "Overcoming sickness and injuries, they raced very well and showed how much our training in the last few weeks is paying off."
Senior Kevin Basch picked up the first win of the afternoon for the Blue Hens, taking home the 1000 yard free with a season-best time of 9:34.68. He followed that up with a win in the 500 yard free in 4:41.31 and was part of the third-place 400 yard free relay team.
Junior Kevin Bargate was also a member of the 400 free relay squad and swam to a second-place finish in the 200 yard free. Sophomore Justin Sabo was a winner in the 200 yard butterfly in 1:55.14 and earned a third-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly.
Junior Eric Veit earned a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke along with the third place position in the 400 yard free relay.
In diving, freshman Doug Vaca earned a win in the men's 1-meter with a 270.30 score and a second-place finish in the 3-meter. Sophomore Jessica Antonio scored a 256.65 to win the women's 1-meter and placed second in the 3-meter.
Freshman Mira Selling led the women's charge and was first to the wall in the 500 yard free in 4:56.35. She picked up a second-place mark in the 200 free and was part of the second place 400 yard freestyle relay team.
Also on that squad was freshman Natalie Dobrzykowski who also earned a runner-up in the 100 yard free in front of Selling who placed third.
Junior Catherine Erwin earned two second-place finishes, placing second in both the 200 and 100 butterfly.
Delaware returns to action with the annual Senior Meet, Friday, Jan. 17 at Rawstrom Natatorium with races set to begin at 2 p.m. against Saint Francis Brooklyn.
