ORLANDO, Fla. – Anyone who has been around the University of Delaware knows the pride that surrounds the campus. Alums, current students and prospective students, along with the community bleed the blue & gold.
No one shows that more than the University of Delaware spirit squads and this weekend that pride was on full display for the nation to see.
Competing at UCA/UDA College National Championships at Walt Disney World Resort, the Blue Hens took home the national championships in Gameday Co-Ed Cheerleading for the second straight year, while also having three other top-five finishes from dance and jazz.
This is the 12th-straight year that Delaware Spirit has come away with a national championship. Overall, the spirit squads have now taken 19 national championships (eight from mascot, six from dance and five from cheer).
YouDee took home second in the Mascot competition, while the dance team took home third in jazz and fourth in hip-hop.
Quotable:
"The cheer team is excited to be bringing another Game Day National Championship back to the University of Delaware. The Game Day competition is a true test and representation of our school's traditions and game day atmosphere. This team was able to bring the judges and fans a showcase of what it's like to be in Delaware Stadium. We couldn't have asked for a better response. Our other finishes in Small Coed (8th), Jazz (3rd), Hip Hop (4th) and Mascot (2nd) were the results of hours and hours of hard work and dedication. While they weren't all the results we wanted, we know we will continue to get better and inspire Blue Hen pride. The coaching staff is very proud of our student-athletes' attitude and effort during this nationals' season. We are very grateful for the love and support of our friends, family, fans, alumni and University staff. We could not have done it without them." – Spirit Coordinator and Head Cheer Coach Ryan Blanford
"It was very exciting winning our second consecutive national championship. We love being able to show off our traditions and make people feel like they are actually experiencing game day at the University of Delaware. Our teams' word for this season was "choose" to remind us that all the choices we make matter. We choose to trust in each other and to practice like champions. However, our success was made possible due to the dedication, love, and support from our coaches, our alumni, and our family and friends. It's humbling to know we helped to build upon the legacy that is Delaware Cheer and we hope it only continues to grow from here." – senior cheer captain Kirstin Leahy
