WILMINGTON, Del. – The Blue Hens will have two more inductees into the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame as Lou Romanoli '56 and
Tyresa Smith '07 have been named as 2020 honorees.
A three-year starter for the University of Delaware baseball team, Romanoli helped lead Tubby Raymond's Blue Hens to an 18-3 record while qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the first time during his senior campaign. He was a shortstop, first baseman and pitcher during his tenure.
Romanoli was also involved with the Delaware Semi-Pro Baseball League, Wilmington Football League and Wilmington Blue Bombers basketball organization. He was an avid runner that participated in the 1980 Boston Marathon and ran the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon for 25 consecutive years until double knee replacement surgery turned him into a dedicated cyclist.
A native of Dover and 2003 graduate from Polytech High, Smith was the first University of Delaware women's basketball player to be drafted by the WNBA when she was picked 18th overall by the Phoenix Mercury in 2007. A two-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year honoree and the first Delaware player to earn All-Region accolades, Smith holds the school record with 342 career steals and is third on the Blue Hens all-time scoring list with 1,635 points and fifth with 307 assists.
Smith led the Hens to 92 wins, 55 Colonial Athletic Association victories and three postseason appearances, including a trip to the 2007 NCAA Tournament. She was inducted into the Delaware Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.
The pair will be honored alongside Mel Gardner, Jack Gregory, Jerry Kobasa, George Kosanovich, Tom Lemon, Art Madric, Charles Rayne and Gary Smith on Wednesday, October 13 at the Chase Center on the Wilmington Riverfront. Tickets to the event are on sale now and can be purchased online at the DSMHOF website at www.desports.org/events.
