NEWARK, Del. – Delaware redshirt junior Ty Battle was named Monday as a member of the newly formed NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Student-Athlete Engagement Group.
The group, which consists of current women's basketball student-athletes from all 32 Division I conferences, will serve as an amplifying voice for women's basketball on key initiatives, legislation and various issues.
"I think it's so important to be involved in such an amazing engagement group," stated Battle, who is majoring in sports management. "It's a wonderful opportunity and honor to share my voice and represent the University of Delaware and also the Colonial Athletic Association. This is another way to address concerns and issues within the women's basketball community. My plans and hopes for this group are to bring more awareness to issues that are going on right now in our world that are not talked about, a lot of which gets swept away after a day or two."
The group, which was formed in collaboration with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), is the first of its kind at the NCAA and will have a direct connection to the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and will also serve as a conduit of information from and to the WBCA.
"Ty will be a great representative for our University, our women's basketball family and our conference as well as the NCAA," commented Delaware head coach Natasha Adair. She will continue using her voice to speak on issues regarding women's basketball, legislation and other issues that student-athletes face on a daily basis."
Student-Athletes were nominated through the WBCA NCAA Division I Conference Captains program that includes a head coach or "captain' in each conference with whom the WBCA communicates regularly on important issues. The term of service for each student-athlete will coincide with athletics eligibility for competition. The group will meet monthly via teleconference/videoconference.
