The voice of the Blue Hens earns his fifth Delaware Sportscaster of the Year honor
NEWARK, Del. – iHeartMedia and University of Delaware Athletics are proud to announce that for the second consecutive year, "Voice of the Blue Hens" Scott Klatzkin has been named the Delaware Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). The 2020 honor marks the fifth time he has won the award, having previously been selected in 2009, 2012, 2016 and 2019.
Â
Since the award was first given out in 1959, Klatzkin and UD Athletics Hall of Famer, Bob Kelley, are the only Delaware Sportscasters to receive the honor in three separate decades. Kelley was the popular radio broadcaster for Delaware football from 1950 – 1987.
Â
"We are grateful for all of the hard work Scott puts in for not just our football program, but all of Delaware Athletics," said head football coach Danny Rocco. "He is a great friend and asset to us and we're excited to see him recognized for his tremendous work."
Â
Due to the fall season's postponement, 2020 was the first calendar year since 2011 in which Klatzkin was not heard broadcasting Blue Hens football games, but he will soon begin his ninth season as the play-by-play voice for Delaware football this spring. The University of Delaware alum did, however, complete the 2019-20 season in March and begin the 2020-21 campaign in November as the Blue Hens men's basketball broadcaster. Like so many in the industry, Klatzkin has had to adjust to calling games amidst a pandemic.
Â
"Scott is the consummate professional. From broadcasting with a mask on in the stands at home games, to calling the action off a video monitor for away games, Scott has ensured we are still providing the very best possible product for our community," says iHeartMedia Area President, Brit Goldstein. "Our listeners are looking for a sense of normalcy, and Scott has gone the extra mile for them. By overcoming many logistical challenges and returning to the airwaves this year, Scott deserves the continued recognition he has received."
Â
The Blue Hens radio play-by-play man was also seen on television broadcasts in 2020. Klatzkin paired with his color analyst, Bill Harman, to provide commentary for multiple UD basketball games airing on NBC Sports and SportsNet New York (SNY). He also represented the Colonial Athletic Association as sportscaster for the opening round games of the CAA Men's Basketball Championship in Washington, D.C.
Â
In addition to his radio and television roles, Klatzkin added an iHeartRadio podcast to his duties in the fall. The "As Always" Blue Hens podcast features in-depth interviews with current Blue Hens student-athletes and staff, as well as all-time greats and famous alumni.
Â
The News Journal's Martin Frank claimed Delaware Sportswriter of the Year honors for the fourth time in his career. National Sportscaster of the Year Mike "Doc" Emrick of NBC and National Sportswriter of the Year Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic, along with Klatzkin, Frank and all the other state winners will be honored at the NSMA Awards Weekend, June 26-28, 2021 in Winston-Salem, NC.
Â
Klatzkin's award-winning work will continue on Saturday when the Blue Hens host Hofstra at the Bob Carpenter Center at 2 p.m., and can be heard on 94.7 WDSD-FM, iHeartRadio and FloSports.
