Blue Hens host 21-time NCAA champion North Carolina on March 20
NEWARK, Del. – Delaware women's soccer head coach Mike Barroqueiro announced an eight-game schedule for the spring of 2021 Tuesday afternoon.
The schedule, postponed from the fall of 2020, is highlighted by a March 20 home match against No. 2 North Carolina, who has won the NCAA Championship a record 21 times. This is the first time the Blue Hens have hosted an ACC team since 1992, and will be Delaware's highest ranked opponent ever.
"It's an exciting feeling to know that we are finally going to get out on the field and play together as a team again," Barroqueiro said. "It's been a long road to get here but we couldn't be more excited for the opportunity. We have a balanced schedule between the non-conference portion and the conference slate and, of course, it's always an exciting moment when you get to host the best team in the history of the sport at your home field. We're looking forward to all the unknowns this season is sure to offer and can't wait to get started!"
The Blue Hens open the year with three non-conference matches, starting at Saint Joseph's on Thursday, Feb. 25. Delaware travels to George Mason a week later on Thursday, March 4, and then plays the first home game at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium on Tuesday, March 9 vs. Delaware State.
The first Colonial Athletic Association match of the year is Sunday, March 14 at Northeastern, followed by the marquee match-up against the Tar Heels the following Saturday.
The regular season slate closes with three CAA matches. The Blue Hens host the reigning CAA champions Hofstra on Saturday, March 27 before traveling to Towson for a match on Sunday, April 4. Delaware's regular season finale will take place on Saturday, April 10 when the Hens host Drexel.
CAA tournament details and information regarding spectators at home matches will be announced at a later date.
The Blue Hens look to build on a 2019 season where they went 12-7 overall and 7-2 in the conference, good for a second-place CAA finish, the highest in program history.
