The day Coach Adair recruited me from Catonsville High School was the beginning of my journey in becoming a Blue Hen. Coach Natasha Adair, Coach Sarah Jenkins, Coach Mykala Walker and Coach Bob Clark were all committed to coming out to my games. The most memorable one was during my senior year when they came out to the state championship game. Even though the outcome wasn't in our favor, seeing how supportive they were made a lasting impression on me.
Entering my freshman year, I was very reserved and Coach Adair was determined to help me overcome this. One thing that I learned quickly was the pace of college basketball being something I needed to get used to. Coming in as an 18-year-old competing against 21+ year old athletes that were bigger and stronger than I was, was a challenging piece for me, but that wasn't going to stop me. The goals I set for myself in high school carried over to college – I still wanted to be a threat in scoring, attacking the basket and being a hard-nosed defender. I wanted to be crowned Rookie of the Year but with a few games left in the season, I was sidelined with a broken hand. That injury weighed on me hard because I was just starting to gain some success earning Rookie of the Week awards and my confidence was building. When the year ended, my top priority was to improve on my game and remain healthy so I wouldn't have to sit out any games. Looking back, freshman year was definitely a year of getting a feel of how the next few years of my career would go. It allowed me to see what I should work on and what I could do to get not only myself but also my teammates to the next level.
Year 2 – sophomore year – let's talk about the CONFIDENCE that I had in our team and achieving my own goals. My eyes was set on being named Player of the Year. I spent countless hours in the gym with Coach Jenkins during the summer, preseason and throughout the season. The season didn't go as planned and we were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a rare moment for the world to regroup and refocus on what was important. Delaware has been my home away from home and the coaches were there to make sure we were well taken care of. Coach Adair would check in on us every day to see how we are feeling and ways to stay up through this pandemic.
Heading into my junior year dubbed the COVID Year – talk about SPECIAL. The immediate goal was to return to play safely – my personal goal remained the same of being named Player of the Year but what I wanted the most for us was raising the CAA Championship. COVID-19 presented its challenges and we followed all the precautions in taking care of our bodies to stay healthy and still be able to complete the season. We had to get used to not being able to play in front of fans, especially when we feed off of their energy. Instead, we looked to each other's drive and determination and it is a huge credit to our success. It was an exceptional year for us – Regular season champs – Finally named Player of the Year – we fell short in the CAA championship but we made NOISE at the WNIT by winning the regional championship ending the year with a 24-5 record. With all the adversity and the countless hours we put in individually and as a team to have a DOMINANT season was more than inspiring for us to keep going.
Year 4 – I want to pick up right where we left off – DOMINANT. I would love to start off the season being named Preseason Player of the Year and being among the top finishers in the league. As a squad, raising the CAA Championship. We already proved that we can accomplish anything and I am positive that if we continue to work hard and together, we will achieve those goals and more! End of the year goals - being named back-to-back Player of the Year has a nice ring to it but I know I have to continue to work my hardest, increase percentages, be more vocal and contribute to the team's success. Overall, I am looking forward to a successful and FUN year and we can't wait to see all of our fans and supporters come cheer us on this year. It's time to Go! Senior Season! Let's Work!
