Honrubia Leads Blue Hens at ITA Atlantic Regionals

ANNAPOLIS, MD. – Delaware women's tennis sophomore Julieta Honrubia advanced to the Round of 16 and five Blue Hens combined to win six matches in both singles' and doubles' play over the weekend at the ITA Atlantic Regionals. Play was held at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Honrubia, who had a bye into the second round, won her first match in straight sets (7-5, 6-2) on Friday afternoon before advancing in a three-set match (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) on Saturday. She fell in a tough match in the Round of 16 to the tournament's second seed.
Samantha Svendsen and Eliza Askarova both also had first-round byes and each cruised with easy wins on Friday. Svendsen defeated her opponent 7-5, 6-1 and Askarova advanced by a 6-1, 6-2 score, before both fell in the third round.
In doubles, the teams of Honrubia and Svendsen (6-0) and Askarova and Isabella Montana (6-3) were each victorious on Friday morning before falling in their respective Round of 16 matches.
The women's tennis program will conclude the fall portion of its schedule when the squad travels to Philadelphia for the Dragon Invite, hosted by Drexel University. Play will be held the weekend of October 22-24.
