NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware head football coach Ryan Carty has announced the first set of updates to his coaching staff, as he has retained Manny Rojas, Holman Copeland and Rich Yahner.
Rojas will continue to serve as the defensive coordinator. Since Rojas' arrival to the UD campus in the spring, three defensive players have earned First Team All-CAA recognition, including All-American Kedrick Whitehead, a two-time honoree. In the spring of 2021, the Blue Hens finished third in the FCS in scoring defense and fourth in total defense while carrying a plus-11 turnover margin that included 11 interceptions. Turnovers played a key role in Delaware's CAA title run and FCS Semifinal appearance as the Blue Hens had at least one takeaway in all but one game and multiple turnovers forced in 5-of-7. Rojas also coached at UD from 2017-18 as the linebackers coach.
Copeland, a member of the UD coaching staff since 2019, will continue his role as the cornerbacks coach. Since Copeland's arrival, the blue hen secondary has been a threat to opposing offenses picking off 28 passes over the last three seasons.
Yahner, who joined the Blue Hens in the spring will continue to coach the linebackers. With over 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, Yahner's expertise has helped shape the linebackers' core into one of the best in the CAA earning multiple conference accolades.
Also, continuing on staff with the Blue Hens will be defensive quality control assistant Jalen Kindle. Kindle is a two-time Delaware alum, having earned his bachelor's degree in 2016 and his MBA in 2018.
"I'm excited to keep some familiar faces on staff in Manny, Holman, Rich and Jalen," said Carty. "Manny is an experienced coach and great coordinator. He has been able to create a defensive scheme that attacks and applies pressure to opposing offenses which matches our style of play."
