CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Delaware field hockey team fell to Northwestern University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, 4-1.
"We did not advance in the NCAA tournament today, but this team has advanced so much in their lives as Blue Hen student-athletes and people, not just today, but during the past 14 months," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof, "I am so proud of the fight and focus this team brought every day, all throughout the academic year and the sacrifices they made to make this experience a reality."
The Blue Hens lone goal came off of a penalty corner deflection by Grace Hoepfner, assisted by Femke Strien and Emily Kresho, in the 53rd minute of play.
Junior goalkeeper, Lizzie Gaebel, had four saves on the day while the Blue Hens attack posted ten shots and three penalty corners.
"As a program, we want to thank our seniors - Ellie, Emily and Femke - for their contributions and for positioning DEHO very well for the 2021 fall season," continued van de Kerkhof, "We also would like to thank the junior and sophomore classes for being the glue and holding this team together when we faced COVID protocol challenges. Lastly, I want to commend our freshmen for stepping up to the plate when we needed them, knowing it wasn't easy, but the situation demanded them to step in at an earlier stage than perhaps preferred."
The Blue Hens move to 8-10 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and conclude their spring 2021 season with a 6-4 record and a ninth CAA Championship under their belt.
