Women’s Soccer Suffers First Loss of the Season

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware fought hard under the lights at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium, but a second half surge by Villanova lifted the Wildcats to a 4-1 victory past the Blue Hens.

"Tonight was a tough game against a really good Villanova team. Hats off to them. That's the best Villanova team I've seen in a couple years," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "I thought our defending tonight was a little young. We pride ourselves with putting pressure on the ball but tonight we spent a lot of time chasing. There's a lot to be learned and this is a great learning experience. We'll take a look at the film and bounce back for Thursday."

The Wildcats (2-0) were able to sneak one past Lauren Krinsky as they drew her out of the box to score one in the open net in the 28^th minute.

The Blue Hens (1-1) tied the match when rookie Sydni Wright, who made her first career start, crossed the ball from the left side and found Anna Diffendal in the box for a headed goal to tie the match at 1-1 in the 31^st minute. It was the first headed goal of the season by Delaware.

Villanova came out of halftime and scored in the 51^st minute to take a 2-1 advantage on the home team. The Wildcats were able to connect on two more goals giving them a 4-1 lead and the eventual win.

Villanova tallied 22 shots in its season opener, but tonight Delaware's defense held them to 15. The Blue Hens registered 12 shots. The Wildcats edged the Blue Hens in corner kicks, 6 to 2.

Both keepers were busy in the net, as Krinsky had three saves and Villanova's Megan McClay had four.

Delaware will play at Monmouth on Thursday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. for its first road match of the season. The Blue Hens will return to Newark on Sunday, Aug. 29, as they host Seton Hall at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium at 1 p.m.
