Delaware Competes at Bedford Cup

COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The Delaware women's tennis team made the short trip to the University of Maryland over the weekend to participate in the Bedford Cup. Over the three days, five Blue Hens competed in both singles and doubles play, combining to win 11 matches.
In Flight A action, Julieta Honrubia and Eliza Askarova each advanced to semifinals as Honrubia won her first-round match in straight sets, 7-6(11), 6-3, before coming back for a strong second-round victory, 1-6, 7-6, 10-8. Askarova had a bye into the second round where she defeated her opponent by a 7-6(6), 2-1 score.
Samantha Svendsen had a bye into the second round of Flight B. She fell in that contest, but came back to win a match in the consolation bracket. Isabella Montana reached the semifinals of Flight C as she also had a first-round bye and followed that up with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over her foe from George Washington.
Viva Laas dropped her first match in Flight D, but bounced back to reach the consolation finals, using a come-from-behind 4-6,6-3, 10-4 victory in the semifinals.
In doubles play, Svendsen and Honrubia partnered to win a pair of matches, by scores of 6-0 and 6-2, to advance to the semifinals of Flight A. At the other end of the bracket, Askarova and Montana won a difficult second-round match, 7-6(4) to reach the quarterfinals. Following a defeat, the duo bounced back to win a pair of consolation matches.
The Blue Hens will be back in action the weekend of October 1-3 when the squad travels to Annapolis, Maryland for the ITA Regionals.
