NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware linebacker Johnny Buchanan has been added to the watch list for the 2022 Buck Buchanan Award, given to the best defensive player in the country. He joins teammate Kedrick Whitehead who was named to the watch list prior to the start of the season.
The nation's leading tackler, Buchanan has been a force on one of the nation's best defenses with 78 total tackles, averaging 13.0 takedowns per game. He got the season off to a strong start, tying a Delaware single-game record with 23 wins in UD's 14-7 win at Navy as the Blue Hens allowed the fewest points by a CAA team against an FBS opponent since 2006. For his performance, Buchanan was named both the CAA Defensive Player of the Week and FedEx Ground FCS National Defensive Player of the Week by Stats Perform.
The Brick, New Jersey native has had double-digit tackle performances in four of Delaware's first six games. He was also named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week after registering 11 tackles in a 24-10 victory over Towson. Against William & Mary, Buchanan registered 19 tackles which is tied for the ninth-most in program history. He currently holds two of the top-three single-game tackle performances in the FCS this season.
More student-athletes can join the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List before a national media panel selects the winner following the regular season. First awarded in 1995, the Buchanan includes recipients such as Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis, Jared Allen and Arthur Moats.
