BLACKSBURG, Va. – In comeback fashion, Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Eliza Askarova defeated Mary Brumfield and Selma Cadar from Maryland to claim the ITA Atlantic Region Doubles Championship Monday morning. The duo becomes the first Blue Hens, singles or doubles, to claim an ITA Regional Championship in program history.
"I am super excited for Adel and Eliza," Director of Tennis Pablo Montana said. "This is a huge accomplishment for them and for the program! We are not satisfied, and we are ready for this opportunity to compete against the best teams in the nation!"
The Blue Hens jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first set before the Terps knotted things at 4-4. In games five and six, Delaware battled back out of 15-40 deficits to claim the first set 6-4.
Set two began with Maryland up 30-0 but the Hens persevered to pull ahead 40-30. UMD tied the game at 40, but the Blue Hens tallied the game point for a 1-0 lead. Maryland took the next five games for a 5-1 lead. Delaware rallied and claimed five of the next six for a 6-6 tally to force a tiebreaker. UD won the tiebreaker 8-6 to seal the win.
Abidullina and Askarova will compete in the ITA Fall National Championships starting on Wednesday, November 2 in San Diego, California.
FULL RESULTS (MAIN DRAW):
Abidullina/Askarova (DEL) def. Brumfield/Cadar (UMD), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6)
