NEWARK, Del. – For the second time this season, University of Delaware linebacker Johnny Buchanan has been named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. The honor recognizes Buchanan's performance in UD's 24-10 victory over Towson on Saturday that improved the Blue Hens to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the CAA.
Buchanan led another stout defensive effort, finishing with a game-high 11 tackles, including 0.5 TFL. Six of his tackles came in the first quarter, including a pair of third-down stops to force a punt, as the teams played to a scoreless draw through the first 15 minutes. The Brick, N.J. native had 10 tackles through the first half as the Blue Hens built a 14-3 lead.
For the second-straight game, the Delaware defense did not allow a touchdown and held an opponent under 200 yards of total offense as Towson was only able to manage 159 yards, including just 20 yards in the second half. The Blue Hens forced the Tigers to complete just 9-of-23 passes, making it five-consecutive games to open the season that an opponent has completed less than 50 percent of its pass attempts.
This is Buchanan's second CAA Defensive Player of the Week of the season and the third weekly honor for the Blue Hens. He was previously recognized following UD's 14-7 win over Navy when he tied a program record with 23 tackles.
