NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware linebacker Johnny Buchanan has been named as one of the 30 finalists for the 2022 Buck Buchanan Award, as announced by Stats Perform. The award, which is given to the best defensive player in all of FCS, will be selected by a national media panel and the winner will be announced at the FCS National Awards banquet on January 7.
Buchanan has been a leading force on one of the nation's best defenses, as he currently ranks second in the country with 121 tackles and 11.0 tackles per game. He is also third on the defense with 5.5 TFL while also adding 1.0 sacks, a pass breakup, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The Brick, New Jersey native has had at least 10 tackles in six of Delaware's 11 games this season, including tying a Delaware single-game record with 23 tackles in UD's 14-7 season-opening win at FBS opponent Navy. Buchanan also registered 19 tackles which is tied for the ninth-most in program history.
The graduate student has twice been named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week this season and he was also selected as the FedEx Ground FCS National Defensive Player of the Week by Stats Perform following his performance at Navy. Buchanan currently has 298 career tackles and is just two shy of becoming the 20th player in Delaware history to reach the 300-tackle milestone.
