NEWARK, Del. – Matthew Musacchio was announced as the winner of the 2022 Cockpit HENergy Challenge hosted by Delaware Athletics. The contest was simple: attend every single Delaware football home game and be eligible to win $10,000 in student financial aid.
Musacchio, a freshman management information systems major, hails from Hopewell Junction, New York. He decided to attend the University of Delaware because of the strong academic program. The future systems analyst or IT consultant found out about the challenge at Gameday 101 – an event for incoming students, introducing them to Delaware Athletics - with introductions for all athletic teams & programs, a tailgate at The Barn (which is present at all football games), and a free t-shirt for all in attendance.
"Overall, I had a good time," Mussacchio said of attending the football games. "Winning all of the games definitely made them more enjoyable to watch. My favorite moment was the first home game when me and my friends all came out to watch and support the team."
The winner was announced at the Delaware men's basketball game against Davidson, and he was stunned.
"I was shocked, my hands were shaking, and I couldn't believe I won," he said.
Student attendance was at an all-time high since tracking began in 2017. In total, 10,474 student tickets were scanned across all six home games for an average of 1,745 per game. This was a 48.4% increase from the 2021 season totals.
