ELON, N.C. – The third-seeded University of Delaware men's tennis team won the doubles point, but could not hold off No. 2 UNCW in singles, falling 4-1 on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2022 CAA Men's Tennis Championships at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. With the loss, the Blue Hens see their season end with a 15-9 overall record.
"We fought our hearts out today and we left it all on the courts," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "I felt very good about our chances after we won the doubles points but kudos to UNCW for playing outstanding tennis in the singles from the get-go. It was a good season and we accomplished a lot of our goals and we set some records along the way. I'm so proud of these guys and the relationships they have built with each other and I love the culture we have on this team. I am excited for the future of this program and the direction we are headed in."
The Blue Hens got off to a flying start, winning another tightly-contested doubles point. After UNCW won the first match at No. 2, the duo of Liam Hedlund and Alexandre Gluck pulled out a 6-4 win at No. 3 to even things up. James Wilkinson and Pierce Gilheany fought hard for a 7-5 win at No. 1 to give the first point of the match to UD.
The Seahawks bounced back in singles, however, winning the first set in five of the six matches. Pascal Wagemaker and Luis Molina won their respective second sets to force a third, but it was not enough as UNCW came away with the first four wins in singles to seal the match.
The Blue Hens close out the season with a 15-9 overall record that saw them make their first-ever appearance in the CAA Semifinals. Delaware enjoyed a 10-game winning streak, winning its last nine regular-season matches as well as its quarterfinal victory over Drexel.
