Delaware Athletics Celebrates National Walking and Student-Athlete Day
4/6/2022 4:16:00 PM | Delaware Athletics
The day started first with the National Walking Day event. Over 75 coaches and staff members joined together to walk a mile (or more). Upon arrival to the event, coaches and staff filled out walking bibs that stated "I'm walking to…" While some walked for their student-athletes or for health and fitness, others walked for fun or to "keep up with my kids."
While coaches and staff members were encouraged to walk four laps, the unofficial top walker of the day was from the football staff. Holman Copeland, the assistant cornerbacks coach/recruiting coordinator walked 10 laps (approximately 1.4 miles).
For National Student-Athlete Day, coaches and staff member wrote inspirational messages for Blue Hen student-athletes that were placed on healthy snacks that were handed out in the Whitney Athletic Center.
"It's really nice as a student-athlete to know that you're supported," said Maddie Sims, women's basketball student-athlete. "Not only from coaches, but also from staff members that you don't necessarily see or interact with on a daily basis. This is the first place I've seen do something like this. It shows how special and family oriented Delaware is and I'm happy to be a Blue Hen."
Blue Hen coaches joined together for a compilation video thanking student-athletes, and the department topped it off with a joint student-athletes and staff pre-game event before the women's lacrosse game at 4 p.m.
