RICHMOND, Va. – The UD field hockey, women's golf and women's tennis teams each earned the Colonial Athletic Association Team Academic Excellence Award for their respective sports announced by the conference on Tuesday.
The Team Academic Award recognizes the institution with the highest collective grade point average in all 22 sports sponsored by the CAA. The team GPA is a calculation of the grade point average of each student-athlete who appeared on the institution's roster throughout the final day of their respective championship seasons during the 2021-22 academic year.
Delaware and UNCW each had three teams recognized, tied for third most in the CAA behind only Drexel and Elon with four each.
The three Blue Hen squads that were honored recorded UD's three highest team GPAs for the year, as women's tennis led the way with a 3.730 GPA followed by women's golf at 3.679 and field hockey at 3.553.
Thirteen field hockey players were named to the Dean's List for the spring semester, while all eight members of the women's golf team and all 10 members of the women's tennis squad have a cumulative GPA higher than 3.2.
All three teams were also successful on the field, course and court as well this year. The field hockey team won its third consecutive CAA championship with a 3-1 win over James Madison in the title game, before posting a dramatic 4-3 overtime victory over Fairfield in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The women's golf team finished second at the CAA Championship, the eighth consecutive year the Blue Hens placed among the top three at the conference meet, and set a program record by averaging 76.38 shots per round. The women's tennis squad set a program mark with 19 dual match victories, and advanced to the CAA Semifinals for the first time since 2013 and the second time ever.
