NEWARK, Del. – Five home games, four road games and a Thanksgiving Trip to Daytona Beach, Fla. will tip off the Colonial Athletic Association defending champion University of Delaware women's basketball team's 2022-23 non-conference schedule, first-year head coach Sarah Jenkins announced Monday.
"We couldn't be more excited about how competitive our 2022-23 non-conference schedule is," said Jenkins. "The schedule was created to challenge us and intentionally play different styles and high-level competition. This will prepare us for the newly structured and challenging conference play and help us build a strong resume for the postseason."
Delaware will open the season on the road in Farmville, Va. to play against Longwood for the first time in program history on Monday, Nov. 7. The Lancers captured its first-ever Big South title, earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament win over Mount Saint Mary's in the First Four, before falling short to NC State in the First Round a season ago.
The Blue Hens head back to the First State for their home opener three days later on Nov. 10 and welcome Columbia to the friendly comforts of the Bob Carpenter Center for their fourth meeting. The Lions advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT last season. Delaware will remain at home and face former conference foe VCU on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Both squads last met in 2012 with Delaware holding a 13-7 all-time series advantage and are 8-2 in front of the home crowd.
Delaware will hit the road briefly to play Vermont (Nov. 19) for the first time in program history.
The Blue Hens will then pack their bags and head south for a two-game stretch at "the World's Most Famous Beach" from Nov. 25-26. Delaware will face Fresno State and Illinois at the 2022 Daytona Beach Invitational.
Delaware returns back to campus on Wednesday, Nov. 30 and will look to hoist up the Route 1 Rivalry trophy for the second-straight time when they host in-state rival Delaware State. The Blue Hens will open December with a home matchup against Duquesne on Dec. 4. The Blue & Gold will travel for a two-game road trip, first at Princeton (Dec. 11), a program that won the Ivy League title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a season ago, and then close out its road slate at Lehigh in their 29th meeting on Sunday, Dec. 18.
Delaware will wrap up its non-conference schedule at home against American on Wednesday, Dec. 21. The Blue Hens and the Eagles will meet for the 19th time, with Delaware holding the 13-5 all-time record including being 8-2 in the last 10 matchups. American also went dancing after capturing its third Patriot League championship and was edged out by Michigan in the First Round.
