SAAC: Get to know Jennifer Judy

Newark, Del.- Delaware Senior Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Leadership Development & Career Readiness Jennifer Judy has had a long path to where she is today in her current role.
The former standout field hockey player at Delaware graduated in 2002, got her masters degree at Ball State in 2003 and spent a year as sports information director and head field hockey coach at Rosemont College before working at CAA rival Towson in 2005, spending 10 years there before landing in her current role at Delaware.
In addition to her role with student-athlete services and connecting with a variety of people on campus every day, Judy had the chance to continue her decorated field hockey career by competing for the United States at the World Masters Hockey World Cup this year.
What does a typical day in the student-athlete services department look like?
What I love most about my job is that no day is the same! A typical day can include meetings with a mix of staff and students, preparing for or facilitating a team-building session or BLUE program, going out to watch teams practice or compete, along with the "typical" daily emails and communicating with lots of different folks in the department or on campus. I also teach a first-year seminar class in the fall and a leadership class in the spring, which definitely keeps me busy with presenting and grading responsibilities. My non-negotiable is to always get a workout during the day! It allows me to have the energy to do all of the things!
How does your experience as a student-athlete help with your job?
Part of it is credibility that I've "been there," and understand the overall commitment. The other part of it is I'm truly interested in what our students are doing, and want to give back to the place that served me so well as a student-athlete. I want our current students to walk away grateful for how we served them in becoming their best selves.
You had the chance to take part in the World Masters Hockey World Cup recently. What was that experience like, and how did that come about?
Wearing the USA uniform and playing in the Masters World Cup was a dream come true! I actually made the outdoor team in 2020 and the indoor team in 2021 and both were canceled, so to have it happen this year without restrictions was unbelievable. I have stayed active in field hockey since the day I started playing (at age 7!) and have been competing at the Masters level in CrossFit more recently. I found out about the Masters field hockey tryouts through former teammates in 2018, and was able to take advantage of increased training through the pandemic. To be able to train, compete, and be coached at a high level as an adult is extremely rewarding. Nottingham, England was also an incredible location for the tournament. I met so many cool, diverse men and women from the US and other countries throughout those two weeks that will stay with me forever.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
As above, working with lots of different people and having flexibility to do different things every day is really fulfilling. This job taps into the overachiever in me, but also my creativity! It's also a job I can share with my family, which is important given the time commitments and overall investment in the work.
