Three Goals Lift Women’s Soccer Past Elon

NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware women's soccer team registered a hat trick in their 3-0 route of Elon at home to pick up a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win tonight at Suzanne and Stuart Grant Stadium.
"So happy for these kids," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "We've had some really good performances all season and for one reason or another, just couldn't get the ball to bounce our way. The kids stayed the course and tonight was a really nice reward for a great performance. That's a great Elon team, proud of these kids."
Katie Hackley put Delaware on the board first with a right footed goal that she booted past the Elon goalkeeper in the 55th minute.
After an Elon penalty in the box, Sara D'Appolonia tapped in the Blue Hens' second goal with ease to make it a 2-0 advantage.
Less than two minutes later, Hackley punched in her second goal of the night when she squeezed in between two Elon players after a feed from Raychel Speicher to send the ball down the middle of the net to make it a 3-0 match in favor of the Blue Hens.
Odaliana Gomez made her first career start tonight. Gomez made five saves in goal to earn her first win of the season.
Elon fell to 6-3-2, 2-1 overall as it was handed its first conference loss.
Delaware (2-7-3) registered its first CAA win this season to improve to 2-1-1 at home.
Both teams attempted 14 shots, while the Phoenix held the slight edge in corner kicks (6-5).
The Blue Hens host Towson on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday's match is Alumni Day.
