NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware linebacker Johnny Buchanan has been named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday morning. The honor recognizes Buchanan's performance during Delaware's season-opening 14-7 victory at FBS opponent Navy on Saturday.
Buchanan was a blur in a strong UD defense, tying a Delaware record with 23 tackles on the day, including nine solo stops and a forced fumble. He made two key tackles in the red zone as the Blue Hens stopped a late drive by the Midshipmen and forced a turnover on downs. Buchanan led a defense that allowed just seven points, the fewest by a CAA team against an FBS opponent since 2006, and forced three turnovers while holding Navy 0-for-3 on fourth downs.
Buchanan tied the single-game tackles record set by Darrell Booker, who also had 23 takedowns against Temple in 1985 and West Chester in 1987. The 23 tackles on Saturday were the most in all of Division I, both FCS and FBS, this season.
Saturday was Delaware's first win over an FBS program since 2007 when the Blue Hens defeated Navy 59-52 behind Joe Flacco's four touchdown passes and four rushing scores by Omar Cuff. Delaware is now 16-18 all-time as an FCS program in games against an FBS opponent, the third-most wins in the country.
