NEWARK, Del. – Delaware Athletics held its annual free National Girls & Women in Sports Day Clinic on Sunday, February 12 and nearly 250 girls aged 5-12 learned a variety of sports from UD's division I and club sport student-athletes. It's the 36th year of celebrating the national event, which is organized by the Women's Sports Foundation.
The Blue Hens celebrated the day with young girls having the opportunity to learn different sports by participating in various activities run by several Blue Hen sports programs. Women's basketball head coach Sarah Jenkins kicked off the event with an introduction that had all in attendance excited for the day to come. Members from the UD field hockey, women's golf, women's soccer, track & field, rowing, volleyball, cheer, dance, club gymnastics, club figure and synchronized skating, and club rugby programs volunteered to teach different skills for their respective sports.
Blue Hen Quotes:
"It was great to see so many young girls attend our clinic. I'm grateful for their eagerness and support at our basketball game afterwards," Sarah Jenkins, Head Women's Basketball Coach
"National Girls & Women's in Sports Day has been one of my favorite events that I've done as a student-athlete here. Seeing how excited it makes the little girls brings me so much joy," Alli Burns, rowing student-athlete
"Anytime that we get to share our passions with younger girls is awesome. Just being able to be a mentor for them and show them you can be a women in college sports is great," Anna Kittelson, women's golf student-athlete
"I think just being able to be a part of someone else's journey is what it's all about. The sense of community is huge and it's something to be proud of. It's encouraging to be a part of something bigger than me," Emma Miller, field hockey student-athlete
