There Is No Limit To What We, As Women, Can Accomplish

NEWARK, Del. - Sometimes the shortest number of words can make an enormous impact. Title IX, the landmark equal-opportunity law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or any other educational program that receives funding from the federal government, is just 37 words. But those 37 words completely changed the game for female athletes; gave female student-athletes access to competitive sports, as well as educational and professional opportunities.
Today is March 1st, which kicks off the nationally celebrated Women's History Month, but the University of Delaware women's basketball and volleyball programs started the celebrations a week earlier this year. Both programs partnered with the College of Arts & Sciences Women & Gender Studies program to conduct, 50 years of Title IX: Saluting Women Sports, a film and panel event on Monday, Feb. 20 inside Gore Recital Hall on the University's campus. The Blue Hens were represented by volleyball head coach Kimberly Lambert and assistant women's basketball coach Bri Hutchen and their respective student-athletes Eileen Gex, Lily Rogers, Savannah Seemans and Tara Cousins.
"The panel after the documentary was awesome," said Hutchen. "Having a platform to share our experiences and how Title XI is continuing to create opportunities for women is important for the future. The fight against gender inequality is ever going but worth it!"
50 years ago, women in sports was an absurd concept and now in 2023 we are able to see both our women's basketball and volleyball teams compete at the highest collegiate level; and that is all thanks to the ratification of Title IX in 1972. Our programs along with the Women & Gender Studies class watched the Rise of the Wahine: Champions of Title IX, a film about three trailblazing women of color that battled female discrimination in sports after the passage of the law and overcame all odds to transform the landscape of women's sports, forever. After viewing the film, our esteemed panelists provided their insight, knowledge, experience and the importance of how Title IX has impacted their lives and participation in sports and they didn't disappoint.
Delaware Athletics will continue the celebration of Women's History Month throughout the month of March by recognizing select women in sports through the median of video spotlights via the department's social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
On every Tuesday, UD Athletics will sit down with current women of the athletic department to share their journey, express how they view and celebrate Women's History Month and how they see themselves fitting into Women's history.
