Abidullina, Askarova Claim Single Season Doubles Win Record in Women’s Tennis Victory at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – With their 26th win of the season, Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Eliza Askarova broke the single season doubles win record as Delaware (15-3) defeated Richmond (4-13) 4-2 Thursday afternoon. The duo breaks the record that has been in place since Amanda Campbell and Megan Doran went 25-2 during the 2008-09 season.
"This is a big deal for Eliza and Adel to break the record," Director of Tennis Pablo Montana said. "They have been playing solid all spring and their discipline and focus is second to none when they step on the court.
"That was a good win today. We've been strong all season in doubles, and we took the point again today. We came out flat on a few courts in singles but were able to grind out wins on 1, 3, and 4."
Delaware claimed the doubles point with ease after a flawless win by the record breakers and a 6-2 decision from the third slot tandem of Julieta Honrubia and Maryia Hyrnashka.
During singles play, Abidullina battled in a three-set thriller, while Askarova and Hrynashka also pulled out close contests.
Delaware returns to play on Sunday with a 10 a.m. neutral site match against Charleston at Towson.
