RICHMOND, Va. –The University of Delaware women's basketball team had a pair of Blue Hens recognized Tuesday afternoon by the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) 2023 postseason awards. Senior center Klarke Sconiers landed on the All-CAA third team while junior guard Tara Cousins took home the league's most prestigious honor, the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award.
Sconiers has made her presence known and felt in the paint in her first year in the Blue & Gold uniform. Earning her first-career postseason award and starting in 23 of her 27 appearances this season, Sconiers leads the team with 12.6 points and 1.8 blocks per game. Heading into this week's conference tournament, she is also averaging 4.3 rebounds per game while shooting 54 percent (127-235) from the field and 79.4 percent (85-107) from the free throw line. Sconiers has scored in double figures in 19 games (longest streak: four games), including posting four 20+ point performances highlighted by her career-best 29-point and 11 rebound outing against Lehigh (Dec. 18). Sconiers ranks among the conference leaders in blocked shots (2nd, 49), blocked shots per game (t-2nd), free throw percentage (8th) and points per game (13th). Among the national leaders as of Mar. 5, Sconiers ranks 39th in blocks per game and 40th in blocks. With her performance on the court, Sconiers was recognized by the conference once as the top player of the week.
Cousins is the fourth-ever Blue Hen player to gain recognition from the league for her outstanding leadership on the court and in the classroom through the Dean Ehlers Leadership and Sport Excellence Award. This is the first time ever that the Blue Hens has had back-to-back recipients of the accolade, with former teammate Lizzie Oleary receiving the honor last season. This also marks the first time back-to-back recipients from the same school captured the honor since 2009-10 (Drexel). The annual award is given to a men's and women's basketball student-athlete who "embodies the highest standards of leadership, integrity and sportsmanship in conjunction with his/her academic athletic achievement."
Hailing from Washington, D.C., Cousins has been part of the Blue Hen program since the 2019-20 campaign. Cousins serves as one of the team captains and has transitioned into the team's starting point guard this season. The Washington, D.C. native has started in all of her 26 appearances averaging 8.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Cousins has scored in double figures 13 times this season (longest streak: five games), including pouring in a season-high 15 points on two separate occasions; vs. VCU (Nov. 15) and at Lehigh (Dec. 18); while dishing out a career-best eight assists vs. American (Dec. 21). The three-time CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll selection, College Sports Communicators (CSC) 2023 Academic All-District Women's Basketball Team honoree and Delaware's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President is majoring in Biological Sciences with a minor in Africana Studies.
The No. 8 Blue Hens will open the 2023 Women's Basketball Championship, presented by Primis, against No. 9 seed Hampton in the second round on Thursday, March 9 at 12 p.m. inside SECU Arena on the campus of Towson University in Towson, Md.
