Women's Basketball Concludes Season At CAA Tournament Second Round

TOWSON, Md. – Set to defend the 2022 CAA title, the University of Delaware women's basketball kicked off their postseason journey Thursday afternoon in the second round of the 2023 CAA Championship, presented by Primis inside SECU Arena in Towson, Md. The Blue Hens saw its season come to close after suffering a 78-67 setback to No. 9 Hampton (12-17). First-year head coach Sarah Jenkins and her flock of Blue Hens finished the season with a 16-14 mark.
Klarke Sconiers and Makayla Pippin scored the game's first two baskets to get Delaware started. Seven-straight points by Hampton gave the Pirates a three-point lead, but Jewel Smalls made a three-pointer and Ojo converted an and-one to put the Blue Hens up 10-7 with 5:21 left. Hampton went on a 10-1 run to go up seven, and took a 21-15 lead into the second quarter.
A layup by Nakiyah Mays-Prince at the 6:29 mark brought Delaware within two. After two free throws made by Sconiers made it 27-25, Hampton scored six straight points to go up by eight, equaling their largest lead of the half. Both teams played evenly in the final three-and-a-half minutes, with Hampton heading into the locker room up 40-32.
Smalls scored 11 points and made three three-pointers to power a Blue Hen comeback in the third, as Delaware outscored Hampton 27-18. Hampton took their largest lead of the game at 49-37 with 6:39 to play, but a Smalls' made three-pointer and six straight-points by Ojo cut the lead down to three. Hampton went up nine with 2:06 left, but Smalls made back-to-back three's to cut the Hampton lead back down to three. Ojo and Smalls then made free throws to put Delaware on top 59-58 heading into the fourth, ending the quarter on a 10-0 run.
The fourth quarter begin with three more lead changes, with Pippin putting Delaware up 65-64 with 6:13 remaining. Delaware again retook the lead with 5:42 left on a pair of free throws, but Hampton went on a 13-1 run to win.
Smalls led Delaware with 16 points (5-11 FG, 4-10 3FG) and grabbed 10 rebounds. Sconiers had 14 points (3-6 FG, 8-9 FT), seven rebounds, and three blocks, while Ojo scoed 13 points (3-6 FG, 7-9 FT). Pippin added 11 points and five rebounds.
For Hampton, Madison Buford scores 22 points and Nylah Young added 18.
Delaware shot 35.7 percent (20-56) from the field, 23.8 percent (5-21) from beyond the arc, and 75.9 percent (22-29) from the free throw line. Hampton connected on 37.3 percent (25-767) from the field, 42.9 percent (6-14) from three-point territory, and 88.0 percent (22-25) from the charity stripe. Delaware outplayed Hampton in rebounds (44-36), blocks (6-2), and second chance points (14-13).
Delaware graduates a senior class of of Demi Burdick, Kharis Idom, Wyatt Martin, Pippin, Smalls and Mar Tejedor. We are thankful for their dedication to the University of Delaware women's basketball program.
