NEWARK, Del. – Five members of the University of Delaware football program were selected to the 2023 National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society, as announced by the organization on Wednesday. The five Blue Hens - Johnny Buchanan, Bryce De Maille, Chandler Harvin, Josh Moran and Thyrick Pitts – were five of 41 student-athletes from the CAA to be selected.
The prestigious Hampshire Honor Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA and sprint football who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers. An elite group of 1,734 players from 328 schools qualified for membership in 2023, setting a new record for the number of members in a single year during the program's 17-year history. The initiative has now honored 16,370 student-athletes since its inception.
Buchanan, a seven-time All-America selection in 2022, led all of FCS with 150 total tackles. The All-CAA First Team selection tied for second on the Delaware defense with 8.5 TFL and also added 1.5 sacks along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. A finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, he tied a program record in the season opener as he registered 23 tackles in UD's 14-7 win at Navy. He finished just three tackles shy of tying the Delaware single-season record and ends his career ranked 11th in the UD record books with 327 total tackles.
De Maille was a constant presence at tight end during his Delaware career. An All-CAA Second Team selection during the 2021 Spring season, he appeared in 43 games over his five years in a Blue Hen uniform, catching 59 passes for 673 yards and eight touchdowns. De Maille had 12 catches as a senior, including a touchdown reception on the second offensive play of the season at Navy in UD's 14-7 victory.
Harvin made an immediate impact in his first season at Delaware in 2022, ranking among the team leaders with 39 catches for 615 yards and seven touchdowns. He caught the game-winning touchdown in the season opener at Navy and recorded his first 100-yard game in the Blue & Gold against Towson, catching three passes for 105 yards and a score. In Delaware's first-round playoff game, Harvin caught four passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns.
Moran appeared in 12 games in his one and only season in the Blue & Gold, recording five catches for 61 yards. The Alpharetta, Georgia native was a force on special teams, making six tackles as part of several units. He forced a fumble in the first round of the FCS Playoffs against Saint Francis (Pa.) that was recovered for a touchdown.
Pitts earned All-CAA Third Team honors in 2022, finishing second on the team with 57 receptions for 631 yards while tying for the league lead with 10 touchdown receptions. He is one of just eight players in program history to record three touchdown catches in one game when he caught three against Hampton last fall. In Delaware's final game of the season, he set the Delaware record with 43-consecutive games with a catch. He finished his career among the top 10 in UD history in career receptions (172), receiving yards (2,429) and touchdowns (23).
