WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – No. 2 Delaware women's tennis (21-4) was upset Friday afternoon by No. 7 Drexel (11-11), 4-2, in the CAA Championship Quarterfinals.
"This was a tough one to swallow to end our season," Director of Tennis Pablo Montana said. "We came out great in doubles staying perfect the entire season, but we were not able to carry that momentum with us into singles. My hat goes off to Drexel and their staff for outperforming us as they played a great match and fought until the end. I want to thank all of my players for a good season and for their hard work and loyalty to our program. I could not be more proud of them for the young adults they are and the way they developed and matured this year. A special thanks to Lucy, Austin, Nathan, and Pierce, as I'm very fortunate to have an amazing staff around me who help me become better each and every day. We did some amazing things this year and we set some records along the way. Although our season ended sooner than we would have liked, the future of Delaware women's tennis looks bright."
The Hens took advantage of doubles action, picking up the point with a pair of 6-2 wins in the second and third slots. UD finishes the season 25-0 in claiming the doubles point.
Drexel tallied the first two singles wins, prior to the Blue Hens winning in the fourth slot to knot the match at 2-2. A win in the third spot put the Dragons ahead 3-2 before the eventual match clincher at number one.
Delaware's 21 wins will go down as the most in a single season in program history.
