NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware wide receiver Phil Lutz has been named the CAA Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday. The award, which recognizes Lutz' performance in Delaware's victory over Maine, is his first weekly honor since arriving at UD and it is the first of the season for the Blue Hens.
Lutz caught five passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, marking his third 100-yard game of the season. He caught a 56-yard scoring pass on Delaware's game-opening drive to set a program record as he became the first Blue Hen to record a touchdown reception in six-consecutive games. Lutz also had catches of 32 and 25 yards that helped set up UD scoring drives.
Through six games, Lutz is second in the CAA in both receiving yards (547) and touchdown receptions (8). He ranks third nationally in receiving touchdowns and yards per catch (22.8) and is also 10th in receiving yards.
Delaware used a second-half surge to defeat Maine 44-21 on Saturday afternoon, outscoring the Black Bears 31-7 after halftime. Zach Marker finished 20-of-31 passing for 279 yards and three touchdowns, including one to Lutz and two to Jake Thaw. Jo'Nathan Silver and Quincy Watson both added rushing scores. The UD defense forced four turnovers and Ty Davis returned an interception for a touchdown to help seal the win in the fourth quarter.
