Calson Goodwill: Honoring Brother as Company CEO

NEWARK, Del. – Every collegiate student-athlete faces the same challenges when it comes to a busy schedule with balancing classes, practices, meetings and games. However, for University of Delaware football senior Calson Goodwill, that schedule also includes the responsibility of running his own clothing company.
A Franklin Park, New Jersey native, Goodwill is the CEO of Scelto USA, a clothing brand company that focuses on luxury, comfort and style. The Scelto brand was founded by Goodwill’s older brother, Casley, back in 2019. He created the company and was the CEO until his unfortunate passing in October 2022 at the age of 22.
“He was very passionate about fashion, very passionate about clothes, as am I,” Goodwill said. “He and I were very close growing up. I joke with my family and friends all the time because they always say we were twins even though we were three years apart. We liked the same kind of music, we played the same games, we basically wore the same clothes. He was my identical twin who wasn’t my identical twin. We had a very good relationship.”
The word Scelto is Italian for “chosen” which made it an immediate fit for the company name. Fashion has always been a favorite topic in the Goodwill household, and Casley created the Scelto brand in memory of their late grandfather who, as a pastor, always preached that “everyone has a purpose in life” and pushed everyone to find the reason that God chose them to do in this life. Calson didn’t work directly for his brother, but was always helping in a support role, wearing the brand as a freshman at Bryant and telling anyone he could – classmates, teammates, coaches, professors – about Scelto.
“I was very supportive of my brother and very happy that people liked clothes that he was making and things that he was passionate about,” Goodwill said. “And seeing how that impacted not only me but the people around me just made me fall in love with fashion even more than I already was.”
After his brother’s passing in October 2022, Calson and his family took some time to decide on the future of the company. Following a few weeks of prayer and discussion, Calson made the decision to take it on. In November, before returning to Bryant to finish the first semester of his sophomore year, Calson took the reigns as CEO of Scelto USA.
“At first, I started to take on the brand to live on his legacy,” Goodwill said. “But now I have fallen in love with everything about it. I love designing, I am always sketching on my iPad. I am grateful for it because my parents always told me to follow my heart and not to do something just to keep my brother’s name alive. At first, I believed that this was the best way to honor him, and now I feel that not only am I honoring him, but I have fallen in love with the whole idea of clothes and fashion and everything that comes behind it. It is definitely something I wish to pursue once I am done with football and school.”
In 2023, following Calson’s first semester at Delaware after transferring to be closer to home, Scelto USA dropped its War Dreamer line, which included six items that were designed and inspired by Casley before his passing. Within each piece of clothing are small details to remind people of the brand’s dedication to “love” and Casley’s mantra to help people find their purpose in life.
This past spring, following Delaware’s annual spring game, Calson, who can always be seen wearing a necklace that has a picture of his late older brother, flew down to Atlanta for the Atlanta Streetwear Market, his first weekend event as CEO where he was able to display the Scelto USA brand in front of nearly 8,000 people, including NFL wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
Calson has continued to have a busy fall. In the classroom, he is a senior working toward a degree in health behavior science with a minor in psychology. On the field, he has helped the Blue Hens to a 7-1 start to the 2024 season. On top of all that, he has been preparing for another clothing line drop in November. Coinciding with the two-year anniversary of Casley’s passing, this new line is called “I’m a Dreamer” and includes hooded sweatshirts that were previously designed and released by Casley, and Calson is re-releasing them matching sweatpants.
“I live off three Fs in life - faith, family and football,” Goodwill said. “Those are the three things that keep me going. All of those things have helped me manage it well. If I do ever have hardships, I lean a lot on my faith. I go to bible studies every Thursday. If I am ever struggling in my faith, then I lean on my family. If I don’t have my family, then I lean on football. It doesn’t have to be in that order, but those are the three things that keep me going.”
It is something that I find joy in outside of playing football and doing my psychology work and trying to get into grad school for that. It is something that I have really fallen in love with and I’m very grateful that I enjoy it. At first, I didn’t really know if I would enjoy it and I was just going to do it for a bit. As things have gone on and I have gotten support from teammates and friends and family, it’s made the experience very, very great.”
