Football Names 2024 Team Captains

NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware Football Head Coach Ryan Carty has announced the four captains that will lead the Blue Hens during the upcoming 2024 season. The quartet includes returning captains Brock Gingrich and Dillon Trainer as well as first-time captains Tyron Herring and Ryan O'Connor. The four were chosen by a vote of their teammates and coaches.
Herring enters his second year with the Blue & Gold after starting in 12 games in 2023 and tying for the team lead with three interceptions. He finished with 42 tackles and five pass breakups while also forcing a fumble and recovering another to earn All-CAA Honorable Mention honors. Herring had an interception in his UD debut at Stony Brook and also picked off passes at Towson and Montana in the FCS Playoffs.
Gingrich was the lone captain on the offensive side on the ball in 2023 and has started every game at center over the past two seasons. He led Delaware's offensive line that spearheaded a rushing attack that averaged 160.2 yards/game, an improvement of 16.8 yards/game.
O'Connor started in 10 games last season and was among the best quarterbacks in the CAA as he threw for 2,104 yards and 19 touchdowns, including multiple scores in five different games. He had four games with more than 300 yards passing, including 346 yards in his first collegiate start at Stony Brook. O'Connor recorded season highs of 28 completions, 347 yards and four touchdowns against Duquesne. He also passed for four scores at Campbell.
Trainer returns for his second year as a team captain after starting in all 13 games in 2023. He ranked second on the team with 66 tackles and finished with 5.5 TFLs and a sack. He returned an interception for a touchdown against Saint Francis and had season-highs of eight tackles against both Hampton and Elon.
The Blue Hens will open the 2024 season on Thursday, August 29 against Bryant at Delaware Stadium. Tickets for the 2024 season are on sale now with fans able to purchase season tickets, partial plan packages and single game tickets for all seven of Delaware's home games.
