NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware football defensive back Tyron Herring has been named one of the 203 semifinalists, across all NCAA divisions and the NAIA, for the William V. Campbell Trophy. The prestigious award, given out by the National Football Foundation (NFF), recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.
In his second season with the Blue & Gold, Herring is currently tied for fifth on the team with 10 tackles and has one pass breakup. He started 12 games in 2023 and tied for the team lead with three interceptions while finishing with 42 tackles and five pass breakups to earn All-CAA Honorable Mention honors. Herring was voted a team captain prior to this season, becoming the first transfer to earn the captain title under head coach Ryan Carty.
The Delray Beach, Florida native graduated from Dartmouth College in 2023 with a degree in government after earning All-Ivy League honors as a senior. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in public administration (MPA) through Delaware's Joseph R. Biden School of Public Policy and Administration. Herring spent the 2024 spring and summer as a legislative fellow with the state government in Dover.
About the William V. Campbell Trophy
Named in honor of the late William V. Campbell, the former chairman of Intuit, former player and head coach at Columbia University and the 2004 recipient of the NFF's Gold Medal, The William V. Campbell Trophy has become the most prestigious and desirable "academic" award in college football. To be nominated a student-athlete must meet criteria that include being a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, having a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, having outstanding football ability as a first-team player; and demonstrating strong leadership and citizenship.
The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on October 23, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2024 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments.
