Ice Hockey Defeats Holy Cross 2-1 for First Win in Program History

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware ice hockey team won its first game in program history on Sunday afternoon, coming away with an exciting 2-1 victory over Holy Cross at Fred Rust Ice Arena. The Fightin' Blue Hens scored two goals in the second period to erase a one-goal deficit and held on with a strong defensive effort. With the win, UD improves to 1-3-0 overall, while the Crusaders fall to 3-1-0.

Delaware will return to the ice next weekend as it continues its season-opening 10-game homestand with its first Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) series. The Blue Hens will host No. 6/7 Penn State for contests on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.) at Fred Rust Ice Arena. The games will be broadcast on FloHockey.

HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Chalotte Payne made a career-high 49 saves to pick up her first collegiate win in net.
- Katelynn Charlton scored her third goal of the weekend on the power play.
- Meera Smith buried her first collegiate goal.
- Lexie Lonask, Emma MacIntyre and Bailey Gray all registered assists. For MacIntyre and Gray, it was their first collegiate points.
- The Blue Hens blocked 27 shots as a team, led by five from MacIntyre and four by Lonask,
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Payne made 13 saves in the first period to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.
- Holy Cross drew first blood with a goal just 2:12 into the second period.
- Smith evened the score up as she swatted home a rebound goal off a MacIntyre slap shot with 5:52 gone in the second.
- Just a few minutes later on the power play, the Blue Hens worked the puck around the top of the zone before Lonask found Charlton who ripped a shot under the crossbar from above the circle for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
- Payne made 20 more saves in the third period, including six in the final two minutes as Holy Cross pulled its goalie, to keep the Crusaders from tying the game.

- Charlton now leads the Blue Hens with three goals.
- It is the first-career victory for head coach Allison Coomey
