Softball Crushes Three More Home Runs in 9-1 Win Over Elon

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Hess' home run was a solo shot. She also added a single and scored two runs.
- Blantz's was a three-run home run. She added a single as well.
- Shaffer's home run was a two-run shot. She also drew a walk.
- Ellie Mulligan had a two-run double, walked, and scored a run.
- Mary Beth Cahalan went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
- Katie Scheivert had an RBI single.
- Lillie Scheivert went 1-for-3.
- Kristen Luzon had a pinch-hit RBI single.
- Billie Kerwood threw all six innings to earn the win. She allowed just four hits, one run, and one walk and struck out eight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kerwood threw two perfect innings to start the night, including striking out the side in the second.
- Hess and Cahalan singled to begin the second before Mulligan doubled down the left field line to bring in the first two runs.
- Elon got a run back in the third.
- Delaware erupted for five runs in the third, all with two outs. Hess homered to get the scoring, then Cahalan and Gianna Costaro reached on a walk and hit by pitch before Blantz hit a three-run homer. Mulligan walked and Lillie Scheivert singled before Katie Scheivert had an RBI single to put UD up 7-1.
- Kerwood struck out two more in the fourth. Shaffer led off the bottom half of the inning with a mammoth home run to left center to give the Blue Hens an 8-1 lead.
- Kerwood struck out two more in the fifth and pitched a hitless sixth.
- Shaffer walked to lead off the sixth and was pinch ran for by Veronica Diomede. Luzon hit a pinch hit single to bring her in and give Delaware a 9-1 win.
GAME NOTES
- Shaffer hit her 16th home run of her career and 11th of the season. She is tied with Laura Streets for sixth most home runs in program history. She is also tied with Anna Steinmetz's 2017 season for fourth most home runs in a single-season in program history.
- Shaffer has homered in three consecutive games for the first time in her career and has seven in her last six games. Costaro hit a home run in three consecutive games last season in February.
- Hess' home run was the 40th of her career. She became the 23rd active player in Division I with at least 40 home runs. She is also the only active Division I player with at least 40 career home runs and 40 career wins in the circle and joined Emilee Boyer of Division II West Texas A&M and Terin Ritz of Division II Central Oklahoma as only players across all collegiate levels with 40 home runs and 40 wins.
- Luzon is 8-for-19 with 11 RBIs this season as a pinch hitter.
- Mulligan is on a three-game hit streak where she has an RBI and a double in all three games.
- Kerwood threw her sixth complete game of the season. She is now up to 593 career strikeouts - seventh most among active Division I pitchers.
- Delaware won its ninth game this season via the run rule.
- Delaware has homered in seven consecutive games and has five games this season with three home runs.
- Delaware has hit 13 home runs at home this season after hitting five last year.
- With the win and Campbell's loss to Hofstra, Delaware pulled into a three-way tie with Elon and the Camels at the top of the CAA standings at 8-2 each.
