KT Seay Set to Step Into Leadership Role

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware football team has had some great players come through its program, especially on the defensive side of the ball. This list includes UD Hall of Famers, Darrell Booker and Mike Adams, as well as current NFL players, Bilal Nichols and Troy Reeder. The next one that Fightin' Blue Hens fans should already be familiar with is KT Seay.
Seay will be starting his junior year when Delaware takes the field for the 2025 season. While he may be considered young in the world of college football, he is one of Delaware's most experienced players on defense, having played in all but one game in each of his first two years in Newark.
The Norfolk, Virginia native had plenty of Division I offers coming out of high school, including FBS programs Liberty and Marshall which were closer to home. However, he had an instant connection with Delaware's defensive coaches.
"I really chose Delaware because of Coach Rojas and Coach Link," Seay said. "I liked their energy; it reminded me of my high school and how my coaches used to teach me and coach me up. It really felt like home, and I really wanted that. They had four safeties at the time and Coach Link was looking for another safety that could come in and play soon. I felt like I could take that job, and I did."
Seay was so eager to start his Blue Hen career, that he got an early start. He graduated early from Maury High School a semester early and, along with classmates, Saeed St. Fleur and Ja'Carree Kelly, enrolled at Delaware in time for 2023 spring practices. That allowed him to get 15 extra practices and countless extra hours of meetings and film review ahead of his freshman season.
"I was 17 and there was a lot to learn, and I am still learning," Seay said. "But it was good for me to come in early. It made me smarter and a better student of the game. I was ahead mentally and physically of everybody in my class. I was able to make mistakes so that I could get it right when it counted during the season. It really just helped."
Seay made an immediate impact during his freshman season, playing in 12 of UD's 13 games with 10 starts. He ranked among the team leaders with 37 tackles and registered his first-career interception against Saint Francis. Seay took a major step forward in 2024, starting all 11 games in Delaware's backfield and ranking fifth on the defense with 37 tackles. He was second in the CAA with four interceptions, the most by a UD defender since 2017.
Heading into the 2025 season, the Blue Hens' first at the FBS level, Seay finds himself as one of the veteran leaders in UD's secondary. While still just 19 years old, with several other members of the safeties room older than him, Seay has the most experience in Delaware's defense.
"I am looking to be a better leader on the defense because now I am one of the older guys who has the most experience," said Seay. "I feel like I need to step into that role to help the younger guys excel. I am still young myself, but if I can help the young guys step up, I feel like we will be great as a collective on defense."
With his experience over the last two years, Seay has a pretty good understanding of Delaware's system and what defensive coordinator Manny Rojas is looking for. Something that will help Seay communicate with his teammates is the new technology in his helmet. Teams at the FBS level are allowed to have one player on either side of the ball with coach-to-player communications in their helmet. Seay has been designated as that player on UD's defense and will have Rojas talking directly with him each play.
"It is definitely helping. The calls come quicker and we are able to communicate faster on defense," said Seay. "We are able to move on one accord, so there is no confusion. He can see what I can't see sometimes, and he knows a lot more than me. So if he can tell me something that I'm not seeing, it will help me make a play. There are times that I try to talk to him too, but then I remember it is one way and he can't hear me."
Delaware is in the heart of its fall practices as Seay and his teammates work to integrate this year's newcomers to the team, both on and off the field. This fall is particularly important for Seay and the Blue Hens as they prepare for the exciting new challenge of moving up to FBS and Conference USA.
"I am excited about all of the bigger games, and the traveling we are going to be doing," Seay said. "It is going to be a new experience and something new to get used to. I am ready to attack it full on and just be the best I can."
