Jason Scott Sets Himself Up for Life After Football

NEWARK, Del. — When University of Delaware football player S Jason Scott began his master's degree in international business, he told Associate Director, Career Readiness, Steven Caulfield, exactly what he wanted: a path into risk management and the financial planning industry.
Caulfield, along with retired Director, Student Services for Athletes, Tim Morrissey, connected Scott with Aon, the second-largest insurance broker globally, where he spent his summer interning with the account management team in the company's Philadelphia office.
"It was a really large learning curve for me," Scott said. "I had no background in insurance, so I met with leadership early to understand our coverage and how the teams work together."
Entering 2025, Scott appeared in 37 career games across his five seasons of college football. The Laurel, Md. native spent the first four seasons at Boston College before transferring to Delaware prior to the 2024 campaign.
His internship involved maintaining relationships between clients and carriers, updating the team on market changes, and supporting his supervisor with new initiatives. The internship ran from the end of spring semester until the start of football training camp.
J.T. Jones, a market advisor for Aon in Philadelphia, said Jason excelled in the sought-after position.
"Jason absolutely crushed it," Jones said. "He's presentable, articulate, thoughtful, polite, highly intelligent, and has a great work ethic. When you get a student-athlete, you get someone who understands commitment and the time it takes to get results."
Jones said Scott's dedication stood out from day one.
"He sacrificed a lot of hours, but you get out of it what you put into it," Jones said. "He balanced all of it without missing a beat. He was never late and never had an excuse. He showed personal accountability, was always prepared, and at his best. You'd never know he had just gone through a full workout before getting to the office. He was dialed in and ready to go."
Jones added that Scott's mindset and adaptability set him apart.
"Jason's got flexibility, he thinks the right way," Jones said. "He's thoughtful and deliberate, and he keeps an open mind. Student-athletes don't take anything for granted, and they know how to work as a team. Jason was always good at asking questions. Whether on the football field or in the office, he's good at accepting coaching. He's got such a bright future. It was a dream to work with him."
For Scott, the experience was his first in a corporate environment, and an eye-opener to a potential career path.
"One thing I learned is that insurance is recession-proof," Scott said. "There's always going to be a need, and in this economy, job security is important. I could see myself doing this for a really long time."
Scott credits football with teaching him the discipline, professionalism, and relationship-building skills that helped him succeed at Aon. He also brought lessons back to the team.
"Being able to connect with younger players while maintaining authority is key," Scott said. "Athletes can be really effective in the corporate world. I hope my teammates know they don't have to limit themselves."
A "military-brat" whose father served 29 years in the Air Force and whose mother worked with Veteran Affairs (VA) and as a teacher, Scott said his parents' sacrifices fuel his drive.
"They invested in me," Scott said. "Now I want to give back by creating as many opportunities for my future as possible. I love football and what it can do for me and my family financially, but if it doesn't work out, then this is the lifestyle I want to have. I want to create as many outlets as possible to set myself up for sustainable success and pay back my parents' sacrifices."
