Women’s Basketball Rallies Late to Force OT, Falls to Sam Houston in Extra Period

NEWARK, Del. – A late-game rally for the University of Delaware women's basketball team to force overtime was not enough, falling to Sam Houston, 73-65, in overtime at the Bob Carpenter Center on Saturday. The Fightin' Blue Hens drop to 6-10, 0-4 CUSA, while the Bearkats improve to 10-4, 3-0 CUSA.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Safi Kolliegbo picked up a season-high 24 points, alongside recording four rebounds and three steals.
- Ella Wanzer recorded double figures, scoring 12 points in the contest.
- Lay Fantroy scored nine points while grabbing 11 caroms off the glass.
- Jiya Perry tied her season-high of nine points while tying a season-best with five boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delaware and Sam Houston sat in a 6-6 tie at the game's first media time out with all six combined makes for both teams coming from different players. Fantroy made a layup plus the foul to put the Hens up 11-6, while they held the Bearkats scoreless for 2:49 in the process. Making 4-of-6 field goals to end the period, UD led 17-12 at the end of one shooting 50.0-percent in the stanza.
- The two teams traded points in the second frame with Delaware maintaining its lead at 29-27 with 3:01 left in the half. The Hens held the Bearkats without a point for over two minutes, jumping out to a five-point lead in the process. At the break, the Blue & Gold held a 32-31 advantage
- Sam Houston used a 6-0 run to go out to a 39-37 lead with 6:16 left in the third quarter. With 4:52 left in the third frame, Delaware held a 40-39 lead in a back-and-forth contest. The teams traded runs to end the quarter, leaving a 48-47 Sam Houston lead after three.
- UD made the first basket of the quarter, giving it the lead back at 49-48. The lead changed hands once again with Sam Houston taking a 58-51 lead after a 7-0 run with 3:58 to go in regulation. Ande'a Cherisier ended the Bearkats run with a made layup followed by a Wanzer two-point bucket to bring it back to a three-point game. A Sam Houston layup made it 60-56 with 1:02 left before Delaware missed a three and was forced to foul. Kolliegbo nailed a three to cut it to 61-59 in favor of the visitors. Sam Houston went to the line again, making neither as Delaware ran up the floor to tie the game at 61 on a Fantroy coast-to-coast layup with 14 seconds to play. UD had a chance at a buzzer-beater but missed sending it to OT.
- A 7-0 run for the Bearkats in 44 seconds left a 69-63 advantage for the visitors with 1:37 to go in the first overtime period. The run extended to 10-straight for Sam Houston, leaving a deficit that was too much to overcome for the Hens.

The Fightin' Blue Hens will stay at home to take on Liberty, closing their first-home Conference USA homestand on Saturday, January 17. The game will be at 5 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
