Women’s Basketball Defeated by WKU after Late Comeback

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team fell to WKU, 73-71, inside the Bob Carpenter Center on Thursday. The Fightin' Blue Hens dropped to 12-16, 6-10 CUSA, while the Lady Toppers rose to 8-18, 4-11 CUSA.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Ande'a Cherisier finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds. She is two boards shy of 500 for her career.
- Lay Fantroy also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
- Ella Wanzer led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including a career-high seven triples. The seven 3-pointers are tied for the most by any Blue Hen during the Sarah Jenkins era.
- Trinity Vance rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nearly even through the opening 6:05 of the opening frame, UD held a 13-12 margin with Cherisier at the line for two after the break. With the Hens up 15-12, the Lady Toppers connected on three-consecutive triples to take their first lead of the game 21-15. UD closed the frame with a 3-2 margin for a 23-18 score.
- Delaware scored seven of the first nine points to tie the game at 25 apiece. WKU answered to regain the lead before Wanzer drained a triple to put the Blue & Gold back on top heading into the media break at 4:31. The visitors ended the period with a 37-32 advantage.
- The teams traded the first 28 points for 14 apiece to keep WKU ahead by five. The Lady Hilltoppers held the edge the rest of the frame for a 60-53 difference.
- The first 12 points of the final stanza were split evenly to keep the visitors ahead by seven - 66-59. UD pulled within two after a 7-0 run over 1:20 at 68-66. WKU built the lead back to four, but another Wanzer triple sliced the margin to one. The Hens forced a shot clock violation on the subsequent possession and took the lead with a quick layup by Fantroy.
GAME NOTES
- Riding 11-consecutive free throws into Thursday's game, UD extended it to 23-straight makes before missing its 13th attempt.
- This is the third time this season at least two players have registered 10+ rebounds apiece (Colgate, Towson).
- With Fantroy and Cherisier registering double-doubles, it is the second time this season a Hens' duo has accomplished the feat, with the same pair doing so against Towson on November 30.
