Football Position Previews: Cornerbacks

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware football team is preparing for the 2026 season which kicks off at home against Merrimack on Thursday, September 3 at 7 p.m. Throughout fall camp, positional previews will be posted online to spotlight the different units that make up the 2026 Fightin' Blue Hens.
CORNERBACKS
Cornerbacks Coach Marvin Clecidor leads the room in his first season with the Hens after spending the past two seasons at Penn as the defensive backs coach.
"The returning guys, the guys who played some last season, have looked really good through spring and summer workouts," Clecidor said. "Whenever there's a new coach, there's going to be new techniques or new teachings that everybody has to get used to, so I'm enjoying watching their development. Their development as a group has been on a steady incline."
The cornerback room returns two significant contributors in Kshawn Cox Jr. and Jamarion Kolagbodi, who started 11 and three games, respectively. This preseason, Cox Jr. was named to the Athlon Sports All-CUSA Second Team, while Kolagbodi was named to the Athlon Sports All-CUSA Third Team, Phil Steele All-CUSA Third Team, and Pro Football Network All-CUSA Third Team.
Other returners include Azir Lee and Jalen Ross with Lee missing the season due to injury and Ross appearing in two games as a freshman last season.
Joining the unit this season is North Dakota State transfer Jaquise Alexander (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Catholic) as well as freshmen Shawn Church Jr. (Virginia Beach, Va. / Green Run), and Trent Gummer (Orlando, Fla. / Bishop Moore Catholic). Walter Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa. / Commonwealth Charter Academy), Sewanee transfer Jaylen Mack (Douglasville, Ga. / Alexander) and Derrick Phillips Jr. (Hainesport, N.J. / Moorestown Friends School) joined the squad as walk-ons. Phillips Jr. originally joined the team as a wide receiver in the spring, but transitioned to CB in the fall.
