Gooneratne, Women’s Golf Win Mary Fossum Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Sophomore Rhianna Gooneratne fired an even-par 144 to claim her first-career medalist honors and the University of Delaware women's golf team won its first tournament of the season at the Mary Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State. The Fightin' Blue Hens carded a team score of 23-over par 599 to win by four strokes over Central Michigan. The 15-team tournament was played at the par-72, 6,370-yard Forest Akers West.

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after weather shortened Sunday to 18 holes.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Delaware led the field after Sunday's first round, carding a 10-under par, before shooting a 13-over par on Monday to hold off a late charge by Central Michigan. The Blue Hens finished with 17 total birdies.
Gooneratne fired back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 to win her first-career individual title. She was in second place after the first round, but drained three of her five birdies on Monday to win by two strokes. It was her fourth-career top-10 finish.
Dunigan had a strong tournament, finishing third and 3-over par with three total birdies. It was her ninth-career top-10 finish.
Kim tied for the team lead with Gooneratne with five birdies. It was her fourth-career top-10 finish.

HOW IT HAPPENED

It was the 16th team victory in program history.
Gooneratne's individual title was the 13th in Delaware's history, and the first since Alisa Khokhlova won twice during the 2024-25 season.

UP NEXT
The Blue Hens will return to action in October, when it travels to Kansas for the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational (Oct. 5-6). The two-day, three-round tournament will be played at the Lawrence Country Club.
