WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Morgan Link scored her first-career goal with 13.7 seconds remaining to tie the game and earn the University of Delaware ice hockey team a season-opening 2-2 tie against Holy Cross in a non-conference game on Friday night. It was the first game of the season for both programs.

Lily Myers scored the lone goal in the shootout as Delaware won the best-of-three extra period, 1-0. However, the game counts as a tie in the record books.

HENS HIGHLIGHTS

Charlotte Payne made 33 saves in net, including each of the final 28 Holy Cross shot attempts over the final 55 minutes.
Tiana McIntyre and Link each found the back of the next.
Victoria Borg, Reese Reid, and Emma MacIntyre all tallied assists.
Reid had a team-high five shots on goal, and Katie Belk added four.
Wren Abboud won 11 faceoffs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After Holy Cross opened the scoring early in the first period, McIntyre knotted things midway through the opening frame. She skated coast-to-coast and fired a shot that tipped off a defenseman and over the shoulder of the goalie.
The Crusaders regained the lead shortly afterward and took a 2-1 lead into the third period.
With less than seconds remaining, and Payne pulled for the extra attacker, Link won an offense zone faceoff. MacIntyre worked the puck over to Reid who delivered a low shot in front of the net that Link tipped inside the right post to tie the game.
The Blue Hens outshot Holy Cross 5-3 in the five-minute overtime period, but neither team could find the game-winner as the game officially went down as a tie.
In the shootout, Payne stopped each of the first two Holy Cross attempts. Myers skated in as Delaware's second shooter and fired a quick shot underneath the crossbar for the goal. Holy Cross' final attempt went wide as the Blue Hens came away with the shootout victory.

OF NOTE

Eight Blue Hens made their Delaware debut on Friday night.
Link and Reid both registered their first-collegiate points on the game-tying goal in the third period.
The Blue Hens set a program record with 31 shots on goal, marking the first time they have surpassed the 30-shot mark in a single game.

UP NEXT
The Blue Hens and Crusaders will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Holy Cross' Hart Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
