COVID-19 Updates
COVID-19 Protocols for UD NCAA Athletes Effective April 15, 2024
These protocols have been updated to reflect current CDC, State of Delaware DPH, University of Delaware Health Advisory Committee (HAC), and NCAA guidance as of April 15, 2024. These changes reflect the CDCs COVID-19 March 18, 2024 update. This protocol remains subject to change pending future surges or changes in disease transmission.
What if I Feel Sick?
If you have symptoms of a respiratory virus, take precautions to prevent spread, including masking, hand hygiene and improved air ventilation (open windows, use a fan, meet outdoors, etc.). Please notify your athletic trainer and do not come to practice. Call Sports Medicine (302-831-2226 – Opt #3) and arrange to be evaluated. Testing options are available on campus as well as at multiple local urgent care and community testing centers. Home Rapid Antigen tests are available for purchase on campus at the Student Health Dispensary or Wellbeing Vending machine in Perkins.
If you have risk factors for severe illness, contact the Sports Medicine Clinic for possible treatment to help lower your risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death.
What if I test positive for COVID-19?
Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 are no longer required to isolate. This is consistent with CDC guidance announced March 18, 2024. If you test positive, you should stay away from others (remaining out of classes, practices, competitions, and public spaces) until your symptoms have improved and you are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. Once you meet these criteria, you may return to normal activities while wearing a well-fitted mask for at least 5 days from the onset of symptoms.
What should I do if I am considered a Direct Contact?
Individuals who are exposed to someone with COVID-19 must monitor their condition for symptoms. If you develop symptoms, you should then test. You are no longer required to wear a mask during this post-exposure time frame. You are no longer required to test following the exposure unless you develop symptoms.
Testing
Symptomatic testing is available to students through the Sports Medicine Clinic as well as Laurel Hall Student Health Service locations. COVID-19 home antigen test kits are available for purchase on campus at the Student Health Dispensary or Wellbeing Vending machine in Perkins.
At times we may require you to test following travel to a pandemic region or upon return following a break away from campus.
Vaccinations
As of June 5, 2023, the University of Delaware no longer required a COVID-19 vaccination. While students are no longer required to receive the COVID-19 primary vaccine and boosters, UD strongly recommends that all students, faculty, and staff remain up to date with COVID-19 vaccination as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Particularly, all students, faculty, and staff are highly encouraged to receive a bivalent COVID-19 booster annually. COVID-19 and influenza vaccines are available to students at Student Health Services or local pharmacies.
Masks
Masks continue to be required based on CDC guidance for those who are experiencing symptoms or who have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 5 days.
Masks are no longer required at healthcare or clinical settings unless you are being seen for a sick visit. If you are experiencing respiratory symptoms, you should mask to protect your teammates and those around you.Â
