Sport Psychology

Sport Psychology Services
The Delaware Sport Psychology team is comprised of mental health providers who have specialization in sport psychology. The staff are available to address mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety), general counseling (e.g., adjustment to college, relationship difficulties), and sport performance needs (e.g., performance anxiety, returning from injury) of our UD varsity student-athletes.
Individual services are provided in-person to student athletes who request services. The Sport Psychology team does not provide mandated treatment.
In some cases, services may be provided virtually. Due to licensing laws, the student-athlete must physically be in the state of Delaware at the time of service to receive Telehealth services. Should an athlete be outside of Delaware and within need of services, the Associate Director of Embedded Services will determine the appropriateness of seeing the student-athlete who is located out of state.

Eligibility for UD Services
In Delaware, individuals aged 14 and over can consent to receive mental health services without the need for parental consent.
All UD varsity student-athletes are eligible for services within Sport Psychology once they have started courses (i.e., first-year student-athletes and transfer student-athletes must have started classes at UD prior to being eligible for services).
Spirit athletes (cheer, dance, and mascot) receive campus services at CCSD.
During winter and summer sessions, all students are assessed a one-time Wellness Fee for services provided which includes access to all Wellbeing areas (i.e., Sport Psychology/CCSD, Student Health Services/Sports Medicine).
Routine Individual Appointments
- Individual appointments are available Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 5pm.
- Appointments are in person. Virtual appointments are available if the student-athlete is physically in Delaware at the time of the appointment.
- Clinic offices are in Warner Hall on the Green.
How to make an appointment
Student-athletes must self-refer for services by completing the Sport Psychology appointment request form within their student health portal. Images of the steps in the health portal are provided at the bottom of the page.
- On the home page select the "Schedule an appointment" button -> select "Sport Psychology" -> complete the appointment request form.
- A member of the Sport Psychology team will message you back within the Health Portal with a day/time for your appointment. You are responsible for checking your messages and responding in a timely manner.
Every effort will be made to respond to appointments requests within 48 business hours and every effort will be made to schedule the student-athlete within the next 10 business days based on schedules and availability.
What to expect at your appointment
- The first appointment is considered an Initial Consultation where background information is collected, presenting concern is explored, and goals for treatment are discussed. These appointments require about 20 minutes of paperwork prior to the session. Initial Consultations typically take 50-60 minutes.
- Ongoing individual appointments are generally scheduled for 30–50 minutes.
- Student-athletes can view their upcoming appointments in the student health portal. Student-athletes can cancel appointments and can securely message their provider within the portal.
- Student-athletes are asked to make any adjustments to appointments as soon as possible, to allow for openings in the schedule to be filled.

Additional Clinical Services Available to UD Student-Athletes
Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD)
Student-athletes can receive counseling services at CCSD in Warner Hall on the Green. Services at CCSD address mental health, general counseling, and addiction services. CCSD offers individual, group, and psycho-education services.
To start services at CCSD, student-athletes go to Warner Hall for a same day appointment. First appointments are not pre-scheduled.
If a student-athlete is in mental health crisis, they can present to CCSD for a same day, unscheduled, crisis appointment between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
TimelyCare
TimelyCare is an extension of UD counseling services. TimelyCare provides virtual services including health coaching (unlimited), Talk Now (in-the-moment services offered 24/7), individual telehealth counseling with a licensed counselor (9 sessions per academic year), and a self-help/self-care resource library.
Services can be scheduled outside of standard business hours and on weekends. TimelyCare is able to provide services in multiple languages. Services can be provided to students when they are outside of Delaware.
Student-athletes can access TimelyCare from their phone or computer. They register using their UD credentials at https://app.timelycare.com/auth/login. Services can also be accessed via the app downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
Psychiatric Services
Sport Psychology staff can refer student-athletes for medication evaluation and management by the Psychiatric Services staff within CCSD. In some cases, student-athletes will be better served by providers off campus. Sport Psychology staff will discuss options with the student-athlete and support them in identifying off campus providers.
Off Campus Care
In some cases, the student-athletes’ needs will be better served off campus. This is typically when the presenting need is best treated by a specialist or requires a higher level of care than is available on campus.
The Sport Psychology staff will work with the student-athlete, often in collaboration with the Care Coordinator at CCSD, to identify off-campus providers and help facilitate the connection to care.
Student-athletes who know they want, or need, off-campus services and need support getting connected can consult with a member of the Sport Psychology team for this support.
