Jared Ambrose begins his third season as offensive coordinator and his second stint on the University of Delaware football staff in 2021.
In just his second season in charge of the Blue Hens' offense, the unit produced record-setting numbers on its way to a CAA Championship and FCS Semifinal appearance. Running back Dejoun Lee was selected as the CAA Offensive Player of the Year, the third that Ambrose has coached, and quarterback Nolan Henderson was one of the nation's most-efficient passers.
The 2020-21 season saw Ambrose's offense get into synch as the Blue Hens ranked fifth in the nation and first in the conference in time of possession, including controlling the ball for 41:34 at Rhode Island, good for second-longest in program history on record. Against the Rams, Lee piled up 221 rushing yards to become the sixth player in program history to eclipse 200 rushing yards in a single game. Delaware's 551 total yards at Rhode Island were the most in a game since the 2010 season.
Ambrose returns to Newark after spending the 10 seasons as part of the staff at Towson University, including the past seven as the offensive coordinator. During his time with the Tigers, he was a part of three FCS Playoff appearances, including a run to the 2013 National Championship game.
He has coached two CAA Offensive Players of the Year, including Tom Flacco, brother of UD great, Joe. in 2018, Towson led the league in scoring (34.5 ppg) and total offense (465.0 ypg). In addition to Flacco, he also coached Terrance West, who saw time in the NFL and was the runner up for the Walter Payton Award in 2013.
During Ambrose’s previous stint with Delaware, he worked with the offense, which was led by All-American and Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco. His coaching career began with a three-year stint as a student assistant coach at NCAA II Shepherd, leading the team to a 29-5 record and three straight undefeated West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships.
“Coming back to Delaware has always been a goal for my wife and I. The first time we were here, we quickly understood that the community and fans bleed Delaware blue and gold,” Ambrose said. “This is a humbling honor to work for such a historic program and two well-respected individuals in Coach Rocco and Chrissi Rawak. I can’t wait to help bring national titles back to Newark.”
He and his wife, Ashley, have three children: Evie, Sawyer and Jace.
