Delaware’s famous Wing-T attack was nearly unstoppable during the late 1970’s and much of that success can be attributed to the punishing blocking of Herb Beck.
A native of Drexel Hill, Pa. and a 1979 UD graduate, Herb was a three-year starter for Hall of Fame head coach Tubby Raymond and helped lead the Blue Hen offense to record-setting performances that resulted in a NCAA II national championship in 1979, national runner-up finish in 1978, NCAA quarterfinal appearance in 1976, three ECAC Team of the Year Awards, and two Lambert Cup trophies.
He was a three-time All-American, earning first team honors as a senior in 1979, second team laurels in 1978, and honorable mention notice (as a defensive tackle) in 1977. His 50 games played were at one time the most ever by a UD lineman and he was named to the Delaware Football All-Time team in 1989.
His outstanding blocking helped the Blue Hens lead the nation in total offensive yards per game in 1979 and rank No. 2 in 1978.
At the time of his induction, he was just the second offensive lineman named to the UD Athletics Hall of Fame.
